How to Choose the Best Kayak for Your Trips

A kayak is an inflatable boat, usually quite small, that is generally propelled either by two paddles or a single, larger paddle. The word kayak also comes from the Greenlandic term qajaq ( IPA: [qajaqs] ), which means “a large wooden horse”. The original use of the word to describe a canoe was in the 17th century to describe a wooden sailing canoe. Kayaks are now used for a variety of recreational activities in many parts of the world.

Kayaks can range from very simple, flat-bottom models with no provision for holding fishing gear, to highly sophisticated craft with plenty of storage space and built-in electronic devices. Some people enjoy kayaking just for fun; others like to kayak for exercise or race preparation. Others still take sport seriously, kayaking regularly and mapping rivers and seas for competition. Modern kayaks have increased in maneuverability as well as in storage volume and speed. Many kayaks now have electrical “stations” that allow kayakers to communicate with one another and use GPS equipment while out on the water. The modern kayak is an incredible combination of fun and functionality.

Depending on what type of kayak you’re looking for and how much you plan to use it, you’ll need to consider various options before making a purchase. First, determine your skill level. If you’ve never climbed onto a kayak before, it would be a good idea to talk to a professional instructor at a local kayak specialty store to see how much of a challenge you really have before you begin. Basic kayaking skills are easier to master with the help of someone who knows what they’re doing, but advanced kayakists may benefit more from spending some time on a friend’s kayak, or taking a lesson or two.

It’s also important to choose the correct size kayak for your frame. A too-big kayak will be heavy and difficult to maneuver, and will likely not offer you any maneuverability at all. On the other hand, a too-small kayak won’t offer much in the way of maneuverability, will feel flimsy in the water, and will definitely feel more like an “emobile bicycle” than an actual boat. The best bet is to pick a kayak that’s slightly larger than you plan on carrying, and that offers at least some flexibility so that you can change direction if needed. Some kayaks are rated by weight, so you can get a better idea of what type of kayak will suit you best.

Look for performance kayaks to get the best performance out of your money. Some models of high performance kayaks have features such as built-in rudder systems that make controlling the kayak much easier. Others have built-in lighting that can illuminate the surrounding area so that you can see what’s below, and so that you can make casts into deeper water. Performance kayaks also have adjustable running boards that make moving the kayak easy, and can help you to level land and maneuver over obstacles.

If you are going to use a kayak for whitewater fishing, you’ll probably want to purchase a powerboat or inflatable kayak. These kayaks offer increased stability and maneuverability when you’re going down the rapids. However, they aren’t suitable for river navigation – you’ll need to know how to navigate rivers before attempting to use a powerboat on the currents. Even inflatable kayaks with their lightweight structure can be difficult to paddle into the currents, so it’s best to practice river kayaking first, and then try using a powerboat.
