The Secrets of Mixing Concrete

You can’t walk down the street without coming into contact with concrete. It’s everywhere, but its complex composition is hidden from the naked eye. Adding water to concrete will make it flow easier into forms, but the strength of the concrete will suffer. Ideally, you should use a ratio of 1:2 or 3:1 for normal strength concrete. This type of concrete is best used for pavements and buildings with low tensile strength. However, it’s not suitable for other structures, as it won’t withstand vibrations and wind loads.

In order to create a strong structure, you must mix concrete that contains aggregates. The size of the aggregates depends on the purpose of the structure. A fine aggregate is approximately 0.001 inch, whereas a coarse one is about 0.25 to 1.5 inches. The aggregates must be clean, free of soft particles and organic matter. When they’re mixed improperly, they’ll cause chemical reactions that will compromise the strength of the final structure.

When mixing concrete, you need to be aware of the difference between a nominal and design mix. A nominal mix consists of approximately equal parts of sand, cement, and water. The sand and cement in a nominal mix are standardized and use a 1:2:4 ratio. A design or specialty mix is based on the final proportions that were determined in lab tests. It depends on the required strength for the structure and is usually used when hot weather is expected. Lastly, you can use a machine to mix the concrete. This process will produce fresh concrete.

Generally, you can choose the concrete mix based on your project specifications. The ratio between sand, cement, and water will be determined by the design mix. A proper balance of these three components will yield a strong and durable material. For example, a M30 grade of concrete will have a strength of 30 MPa, while a P30 grade will be much less. In either case, the appropriate amount of water will be needed.
